This song was inspired by Beethhovens famous Moonlight Sonata, its title comes from remarks made by the German music critic and poet Ludwig Rellstab. In 1832, five years after Beethoven's death, Rellstab likened the effect of the first movement to that of moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne. I spent so much of my childhood on Lough Derg in the Irish midlands and the silence and peace of the lake inspired me to obsess over this piece for twenty years. I wanted to honour the emotional independence it has served my musical sense for all this time.
